From Fiction to Reality
Science Fiction has always been a genre of interest in my arsenal of reading preferences. However, it wasn’t until I started college and began reading at a higher level, that I really directed my attention towards literature. It was then that I discovered the beauty and mystique surrounding the genre of Science Fiction.
I have a certain fascination with writers and their works, I believe that reading is a first-hand journey through the mind of another individual. It lets you see the world from their perspective, allowing you to translate your beliefs and open your mind to the infinite realms of possibility given to us through writing.
One of my favorite pieces across the board is Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. In this future dystopian society, all hope of individualism is lost, words even your thoughts are no longer your own. The practice of collectivism and totalitarianism is a theme throughout this read. The relevance of this book pertains to our current society and the tribulations we are enduring. Although the book was written in 1949 the predictions made are eerily all too similar to what we face today in our day and age.
How does this relate to us you might ask? The answers are hidden right beneath our noses, in plain sight. Every day we go through these experiences without realization, the majority of us are so blind to it that we deny its existence. An example is Edward Snowden The extent to which the government really watches the lives of ordinary citizens is overwhelming.
There is no safety net when it comes to the internet, anything digital leaves a footprint that never ceases to exist. From emails, text messages, to your Facebook page, nothing is private. In fact, every piece of information is easily accessible to those with the power to do so. Take a look at the ridicule Facebook has undergone for harvesting users data information.
