The Castle of Conestoga Lake

Image
The Castle This summer I was a part of creating a unique, custom-built home near Conestoga Lake. The property sits on an 8.9-acre lot 10 minutes from Denton, Nebraska. Now to refer to it as a house is almost an insult, this 10,000 sq ft "Castle," is anything from the ordinary.  It has 8 Bedrooms (3 Masters), and 6 Bathrooms to start. If that's not enough the entire top of the roof is part of the decking. The house has an open layout, with more than enough space for anything you could possibly dream of. It has a three stall garage with a mechanics pit for all of your toys.  My favorite part of this project has been installing the siding. We are using a product called Effis in a very unusual way. Without spoiling any of the methods used to create the "Castle's," Stone effect. I will provide some photos of our current progress. Keep in mind this is not a finalized product, rather a live update.  The number of hours that my boss and good friend...

Lake of the Ozark's

Image
Lake of the Ozark's is a man-made lake located in central Missouri. It is one of my favorite vacation destinations as I have been visiting since I was 13 years old. Now there are a lot of great lakes to visit in the Midwest, so what makes this one so special?  For starters, it is a huge tourist destination. Every year the Lake is host to many events, from wakeboarding competitions to the infamous boating races. August 24th Captain Rons will host the Lake Shootout, for more information check out this website. Ozarks Shootout . There is never a dull moment at the lake.  I just got back from a weekend trip with my roommates and decided to share our trip! Our cabin is located on mile marker 42 1/2, this is a prime location with fun around every corner.  One of my favorite parts of the trip are always the "boat days," fill up a cooler and hit the waters for a day on the lake. Coasting to different coves and checking out the beautiful homes is a great way to m...

From Fiction to Reality

Image
Science Fiction has always been a genre of interest in my arsenal of reading preferences. However, it wasn’t until I started college and began reading at a higher level, that I really directed my attention towards literature. It was then that I discovered the beauty and mystique surrounding the genre of Science Fiction.  I have a certain fascination with writers and their works, I believe that reading is a first-hand journey through the mind of another individual. It lets you see the world from their perspective, allowing you to translate your beliefs and open your mind to the infinite realms of possibility given to us through writing.  One of my favorite pieces across the board is Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. In this future dystopian society, all hope of individualism is lost, words even your thoughts are no longer your own. The practice of collectivism and totalitarianism is a theme throughout this read. The relevance of this book pertains to our current s...

Valeant Pharmaceuticals: The Rise and Fall

Image
Today's topic of choice, a pharmaceutical company whose rise to the top was almost as climactic as their downfall.  In our current society morals and ethics seem to be a relic of the past. This story highlights current questionable business practices and its consequences. In 2008 Valeant was a struggling pharma company worth $2.1 billion. You could buy stock in this California based company for $13.24, at the height of there stint in 2015 the stock rose to an astonishing $252.14. To put in perspective in 2015 they were worth 78 billion dollars. If you are interested to see their current stock price go to  Valeant Stock Price . Deemed by Wall Street as "smart money" it appeared that you literally could not lose investing in Valeant. In fact, Hedge Fund broker Bill Ackman quietly acquired massive stock in the company which later turned out to be a massive mistake. So what w as the secret behind Valeant? The process was simple, CEO Michael Pearson intro...

Why Empathy

Why Empathy? Some of the best advice I have received (from my mother of course) is to learn the skill of empathy. Of course, at the time I didn’t understand how looking from another’s point of view would help impact my life. It wasn’t until much later I came to the realization that life extends beyond my own point of view, and how impactful you can be to others. So how does this apply to writing? Well here’s the kicker, empathy is a versatile skill that can be applied not only to writing but sales and life. Good writing consists of getting into the consumer, or audiences mindset. You need to understand their point of view, wants, needs, and tailor a message fit for them. Anyone can spew out ideas and content. The key to success is creating content that is specific to a customer and their needs. For some people this skill comes naturally, others must work at attaining it. “Empathy like writing isn’t a gift, it’s a discipline. Like good writing this isn’t s...
